Stumbleupon

POSTED AT 11:15 on 17th December 2006

Everyone has been writing about the new sister product to StumbleUpon aptly named StumbleVideo this week, which allows you to stumble onto video clips posted on YouTube, Google Video and MySpace Video. The service has already kept me entertained with random little videos for about 5 hours and is fast becoming adictive. The service itself is very much like the standard StumbleUpon where users “thumb up” and “thumb down” links and click the large Stumble! button to move onto the next video. The interface to the website is really nice and simple and has a cool fading ajax menu after about 30 seconds so you can watch the video without being distracted. The service to me is exactly what YouTube has been lacking over the last 2 years as I always thought it was hard to find any good new content unless you wanted to see zidane or diet coke and mentos videos constantly.

Playing with the new video site has also got me hooked again with the StumbleUpon toolbar and reminded me of the early days of Digg when I would find new interesting content. I will probably write again about how much I’ve gone off Digg recently due to its lack of interesting posts. Does anybody else think this? It seems to have got a critical mass now where the community blocks any interesting new content from rising to the top and the 4000+ upcoming stories a day is too much to crawl through. I think I will have to revert back to LiveMarks until I find another service that catches my interest.
