Idea
Why don’t pedestrian crossings have pressure sensors on the side so that they only turn the lights red if somebody is standing waiting. To prevent the issue of people not setting off the pressure sensors (if they are light or stood to the side of the sensor) the lights could turn red for a shorter period of time than usual.

Reasoning
It always really annoys me when you drive to a set of lights that are red because a pedestrian has pressed the crossing button, but then crossed before the lights turn red and then hold up traffic whilst walking away.
