WriteRoom

I’ve spent the morning browsing around Version Tracker seeing if I could find any cool new Mac software and stumbled upon the 2.0.1 release of WriteRoom from Hog Bay Software. WriteRoom has been written about a lot this past week so I wont go into it that much, but its a great piece of software that I would use all day if I were a writer. Now i’ve been a big fan of Hog Bay as their other app Mori is an amazing tool and I cant speak highly enough of it, but it was one of Jesse’s recent blog posts that I was really impressed with.
Jesse, the owner of Hog Bay, wrote a blog post outlining how to crack his own software and get around the registration process. Some people may see this as a stupid thing to do, but I absolutely love the fact that he did it. Yes some people are bound to use this information to steal his software, but to me it just shows how cool the company is and makes me want to buy the software even more. Its the down to earth, personal, mom and pops store goodness type feeling that you don’t get from large software developers – who would never consider publicly showing people how to crack their software – or even admitting that it can be cracked.
I also think that this could be a good marketing move as its sure to get peoples attention, make the homepage of digg and cause buzz about the company. In a world full of great products its hard to get noticed and something like this just makes you stand out from the crowd – a true purple cow.
